The Single European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) offers a series of protocols used to provide a modern train control and signaling platform. The system is designed to enable trains to work together across borders and to optimize the operation of the railways, while maintaining the level of safety expected of previous systems. ERTMS consists of the European Train Control System (ETCS) and the GSM-R system.

ETCS Level 0 and STM

  • ETCS L0: A vehicle equipped with ETCS on-board equipment is travelling on a track on which the ETCS system has not been installed. There is no communication between the track and the vehicle. GSM-R can only be used for voice calls.
  • ETCS STM: (Specific Transmission Module) With an additional module, information from previously installed train influencing systems is used in the ETCS system. The vehicle is not running on an ETCS track, but the information from the track-side train influencing system is converted by the STM module which is interpreted and used by the ETCS system. GSM-R is for voice calls only.

ETCS Level 1-3

  • ETCS L1: ETCS equipments is installed on the track. Using eurobalises installed between the rails, point to point communication takes place between the system and the vehicle. The GSM-R system is only used for voice calls.
  • ETCS L2: ETCS equipment is installed on the track. There is contunious data communication between the system and the vehicle. The balises are only used to sense the position of the vehicle. In addition to voice calls, the GSM-R system can also be used for data communication.
  • ETCS L3: The communication is the same, as in L2. The vehicle does not depends to the sending sensors, the vehicle itself plays an important role in terms of train integrity. Spaces change dynamically depending on each vehicle.

    KMC key management

    It is importatnt in any control system that has a safety-critical function, that the participants in the communication are indentifiable, and all messages are be authenticated to ensure that the message originates from a real entity that has sufficient authority to send the message and can detect malicious modifications made by the attacker.

    HMI (Human Machine Interface)

    Human-machine interface (HMI) software allows operators to manage industrial and process control machines using a computer graphical user interface (GUI). There are two basic types of HMI software: supervision level and machine level. The supervision level is designed for the control room environment and is used for system control and data acquisition (SCADA). It is a process control application that collects data from sensors in the system and transmits the information to a central computer for processing. The machine level uses embedded devices in the system that perform data processing locally. Most human-machine interface software is designed for the management or machine level; however, there are also applications available that are suitable for both types of HMI.
